At Faouët, the 16th century market halls, the 15th century chapels of Ste Barbe and St Fiacre as well as the sincerity of the population in practicing traditions, were sources of inspiration for many French and foreign artists from the middle of the 19th century. At Faouët, the 16th century market halls, the 15th century chapels of Ste Barbe and St Fiacre as well as the sincerity of the population in practicing traditions, were sources of inspiration for many French and foreign artists from the middle of the 19th century. The collection of works kept at the Faouët museum, installed in a former Ursulines convent, and the temporary exhibitions that it organizes each year, bear witness to this unique artistic phenomenon on the scale of central Brittany. The collection presented in 2024 offers a journey to the country of the Breton painter Ernest Guérin (1887-1952) whose entire art is devoted to Brittany. Fascinated by the Middle Ages and its legends, he draws inspiration from them for his illuminations and also for his frames, an inseparable element of his work. Deeply attached to regional culture, the artist expresses it in landscape painting and particularly in the watercolor representation of the pardons of Lower Brittany. The land, sea and sky reveal the Breton soul as much as the characters who are, most often, reduced to small colorful silhouettes. Nearly one hundred and fifty works, some of which have never been seen before, are on display. Several tools are offered to make the visit suitable for all ages and satisfy all curiosities: 33 audio-guided tours, magnifying glasses, exploration bag for 7-12 year olds, guided tours every Thursday in the summer, workshop tours for teenagers and families , flash visits every Sunday in July and August...
