In 818, tired of Breton indiscipline, Emperor Louis the Pious, Charlemagne's son, decided to travel to the western confines of his empire to demand the submission of Morvan, under whose banner various Breton chiefs had gathered. The conciliatory embassy failed, and the emperor's emissaries were sent back by Morvan, who did not bend and claimed the royal title. Rejecting this demand, Louis Le Preux decided to confront Morvan in a battle that took place between Priziac and Langonnet. Morvan was killed. History and legend combine to make this Breton leader, known as Lez-Breizh (the support of Brittany), a fervent defender of freedom.
As you leave the village of Guémené-sur-Scorff, heading towards Gourin, fork left (D1) then turn right almost immediately towards Langoëlan, Rostrenen (D3) to discover the river a little further on. This is also the starting point for the Le Meunier hiking trail.
If you wish to follow the river by car, head towards Lignol (D782) as far as Kernascléden. Drive through the village (stop off to visit the church if you have time). A little further on, at Kerchopine, turn left to follow the Vallée du Scorff.
Here are two good places to get a breathtaking view of the Montagnes Noires:
At the calotte Saint-Joseph in the commune of Langonnet (more precisely, La Trinité-Langonnet). Pass through the village of La Trinité-Langonnet and head towards Paule (D11). When you reach the village of Yun, park your car at the bottom of the road on your right (be careful not to block the way). Climb up to this small mountain (400m anyway!). You've reached one of the highest points in Morbihan!
The Placeguen rock at Gourin.
From Gourin, take the D301 towards Spézet, continue to the Bochequelen junction and turn left. After 1 km, at Placeguen, you can park on the side of the road, taking care not to obstruct traffic or access to the farm road. It's a 5-minute walk to the rock. Take the path and turn right.
The grounds of Château de Tronjoly are accessible free of charge all year round. It is often the place to go for a stroll for the Gourinois, who appreciate its lake.
The château is open to the public forart exhibitions, usually during the school holidays. TheBretagne Transamerica exhibition is also on show. Admission is free.
It is also open during the Fête de la Crêpe and the Sonneurs championship. To see the calendar of festivals and events, click here!
In the Pays du Roi Morvan, motorhomes are allowed to park on public land provided they do not hinder traffic, except in designated areas such as the Sainte-Barbe chapel in Le Faouët.

The chapel of Sainte-Barbe can be reached on foot or by car from the town of Le Faouët, but beware, the route is not the same!
It's very easy to get there by car (3 km). Head towards Gourin. After 1.5 km, turn right and drive straight on. This is a dead-end road.
To get there on foot (1.6 km / 30 mins). Start at Les Halles. Take rue des Halles. At the intersection, go straight ahead on the Chemin de Sainte-Barbe (700 m). Pass under the tunnel, climb the stairs and walk up to the Sainte-Barbe plateau along the cobbled pilgrims' path for 580 m.
A word of advice: remember to take shoes that are suitable for walking, and for the very young, you'll need a sling or baby carrier rather than a pushchair.
If you're not planning to hike the 12km circuit of chapels, it's best to get to the Saint-Fiacre chapel by car. From Le Faouët, head towards Quimperlé. After 2.5 km, a sign will indicate the chapel on your left. Another 300 m and you're there!
The Halles and the Chapelles Sainte-Barbe and Saint-Fiacre are accessible free of charge, at any time for the Halles and at times that vary according to the time of year for the chapels. Click here for all the opening times: chapelle Sainte-Barbe and chapelle Saint-Fiacre.
Notre-Dame church is open every day from 9am to 7pm. Please note that it may close at 5pm depending on the season!
