In the 19th century and in the first half of the 20th century, Gourin was an important center for the extraction of granite, sandstone and especially slate schist. With the arrival of the train in 1896, careers took off remarkably. Their operation has continued to this day except for the slate quarries which were abandoned in 1962, both for technical and competitive reasons (Spain). In agreement with the municipality of Gourin, the association "Traditions et Patrimoine en Montagnes Noires" (TPMN) manages an annex to the castle of Tronjoly including: - A House of Geology in which is exposed the memory of this past industrial in the form of photos of mining sites, workers, quarry bosses, administrative archives, work tools ... These elements are placed in the geological context of Gourin and Central West Brittany. The objects are presented from an educational angle, with many school groups visiting us. - A Workshop of Old Tools. The city has a large collection of tools from the collection of Dr Groazel, Gourin's former doctor. They were grouped together in a room where they are presented by profession (carpenter, clog maker, farrier ...). Outside the building, some agricultural machinery and a 19th century wine press are on display.
