Musée du Faouët

The Musée du Faouët, a true concentrate of Brittany

Art lovers, heritage experts and fans of Brittany, this is THE museum to discover! In the land of King Morvan, the Musée du Faouët showcases Brittany in all its diversity.

A must-see in King Morvan country

A former convent, once run by the Ursulines, is home to one of the not-to-be-missed treasures of the Pays du Roi Morvan: the Musée du Faouët. Here, every work of art celebrates Brittany. All the artists have done their very best to paint this captivating region, each with their own sensibility. It's an original way to discover the rich heritage of Le Faouët and the surrounding area. Of course, afterwards, there's nothing to stop you exploring the various sites represented - on the contrary!

Passing through the doors of the museum is also the only way toaccess the convent chapel.

In recognition of its work and the quality of its exhibitions, the Musée du Faouët was awarded the Musée de France label in 2012.

A permanent collection of Brittany's painters

From the middle of the 19th century, the pretty chapels and Breton traditions of Le Faouët attracted many artists from France and abroad. The chapels of Sainte-Barbe and Saint-Fiacre, and the lively market at Place des Halles were an inexhaustible source of "exotic" novelties to paint and photograph.

Charmed by the welcome they received, these artists soon settled in Le Faouët or came here regularly when they were in Brittany.

Thousands of canvases, now scattered all over the place, bear witness to this ebullient past. They show the splendour of Le Faouët from 1845 to 1945.

Such a wealth of work was bound to give rise to a museum. It was inaugurated on 14 July 1914. Since then, the permanent collection has continued to grow. Today, it includes almost 400 works.

A temporary exhibition renewed every year

In addition to this formidable permanent collection, which is presented on a rotating basis, there is a temporary exhibition that changes every year. These are always based on a Breton theme, or on the work of a painter, photographer or draughtsman who has come to Le Faouët for inspiration. Highly anticipated by regular visitors, it attracts a huge number of visitors who are eager to be surprised and are never disappointed.
