A wonderful family adventure

When you walk through the door of Le Bon Abri bar in Le Faouët, you meet its dynamic owner, Sarah Brabant. But the story began long before she did...

Stéphane, her father, was born in Pontivy. Sarah's grandparents owned the Moulin du Grand Pont in Le Faouët, so Stéphane always went there on holiday when he was young.

His mother, Marie-Ange, is originally from Rostrenen, where they met before moving to Le Faouët. "For my parents, Le Faouët was a new home. They fell in love with each other and with this pretty town". They opened the bar Le Bon Abri in 1981. The place quickly became as emblematic as its artistically-minded owners. They created an atmosphere where music was very present. Stéphane also loves poetry. He is himself the author of some very fine texts. He has added another string to his bow: photography.

Sarah grew up in this lively atmosphere. "Every Sunday afternoon in the summer, musicians would play in front of the bar: rock, Breton music, jazz...".

After secondary school in Le Faouët and high school in Quimperlé, Sarah went on to study for a HND in hotel and catering management in Quimper. She then headed to Brest for a degree in accommodation and touristic environment to complete her training. Then she went much further afield: to Canada, for 8 months, to perfect her English! She returned to France and worked for a major restaurant chain for 3 years.

But Sarah, a veritable whirlwind of energy, wants something different... And just as well, her brother Edwin also wants a change in his life... They embarked on a joint project: to open a bar where they would be partners. After several unconvincing visits to establishments, it became clear that the ideal place was already under their noses. The ideal place was already in front of them: Le Bon Abri! Stéphane offered to hand it over. So in 2011, they took over from their parents , retaining the identity of this family bar.

There's a soul when you come here. Music still plays an important role. We make playlists, so there's something for everyone. We don't put the radio on so you don't hear the adverts between each track. We've kept the snack bar business. In fact, our croque-monsieur are made in the same grill our parents used 30 years ago! We always manage to repair it when we need to. We'll never find anything better.

As Sarah and Edwin remember from their childhood, the welcome at Le Bon Abri remains warm and cheerful, open to all. "Children are welcome, even if they stay late. This is not a place of debauchery, it's a social place".

And from social place to social network, there's only one step that Sarah takes as quickly as an espresso, because Le Bon Abri is not her parents' only legacy. Her father left her another gift...

Would you like a good dose of local news with your drink?

A forerunner in the field of new technologies, Stéphane saw the value of social networking very early on...

Around 2010, he created Le Faouët Infos, which is neither a municipal newsletter nor a newspaper. It's a Facebook page for people who live in Le Faouët, who have moved away or who are simply interested in the town. He saw Facebook as a wonderful, free medium that was practical for posting photos, texts and local events. After his death, it was only natural that Sarah should take over this local news page, a purely family concept, which now has 7,000 loyal subscribers!

On Le Faouët Infos, we talk about cinema, practical information, work in the commune, shops, events, lost property... We see some great photos, just for the fun of it. It's local life at its best. It's a great way to find out what's going on in Le Faouët and the surrounding area.

On this site, you'll find nothing but kindness and goodwill. You won't find any gossip, intoxication or debate. Sarah publishes an incredible amount of information without adding anything, and everyone is free to comment. It's much more than a diary, it's a mine of information that's close to the people who live there. To talk about everything, Sarah finds the time to go to practically every event that takes place in Le Faouët! Every day, she devotes a little time to her publications. In fact, more than a little...

"It takes up a lot of time, but I don't count. It's my passion, I can't stop! Good, because we really don't want her to stop!
